Textbook Abstract Algebra: An Introduction, by Thomas W. Hungerford, Thomson Brooks/Cole, 2nd Edition, 1996
Prerequisites MTH U371 (Linear Algebra) and MTH U575 (Group Theory), or permission of the instructor
Grade Based on quizzes (60%), and final exam (40%).
FINAL EXAM   Thursday, April 16, 2009           ----            8:00am                  

* Course Description

Introduces commutative rings, ideals, integral domains, fields and the theory of extension fields. Topics include Gaussian integers, polynomial rings, factorization of polynomials, Galois groups, and the fundamental theorem of Galois theory. Applications include the impossibility of angle-trisection and the general insolvability of polynomial equations of degree 5 and higher.
