The Xth Maurice Auslander Distinguished Lectures and International Conference
was held at MBL, Woods Hole, April 14-19, 2011, honoring the beautiful mathematics of Maurice Auslander.
The Distinguished Lectures were delivered by Professor Raymundo Bautista from the Institute of Mathematics, UNAM, Morelia, Mexico and Professor Jon F. Carlson from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.
This year Dean Murray Gibson of the College of Science opened the Distinguished Lectures with an inspiring speech highlighting the new direction of Northeastern University as exemplified by this event. Our chairman Rick Porter introduced the Dean and enjoyed the clear presentations of our distinguished speakers. Bernice Auslander, who started this event 10 years ago by sponsoring the distinguished speakers, being mathematician herself, was also pleased by the lectures.
Following the lectures, participants and their friends gathered at the Reception and Banquet in Meigs room of MBL, overlooking the Eel Pond.
The Distinguished Lectures were preceded and followed by the International Conference. This year we had 60 participants, including 19 graduate students, from 10 different countries. Each day we started with somewhat longer expository talks, which were greatly appreciated by the participants - from graduate students to the very experts in the field. Also, each day we had lectures given by the graduate students, who presented their research results, usually part of their PhD thesis. Apart from these talks, we had many participants giving standard research talks. All of the talks, 32 of them, were given usually with great enthusiasm about the mathematics, often inspiring many discussions and leading to new research.
